Economic and mortgage news dominate WSJ front page

Economic and mortgage news frequently graced page one of the Wall Street Journal during the three months ending Sept. 30, according to NewsBios.

An exclusive NewsBios survey of Journal bylines show that economics writer Greg Ip led all staffers in terms of the number of page one stories he wrote, co-wrote or contributed to during that time period. Housing editor James R. Hagerty was also among the top five page one contributors.

Other Journal staffers who most often contributed were special writer Michael M. Phillips and Pentagon reporter Greg Jaffe, who has since gone on book leave.

Just looking at the month of September, 13 journalists wrote, co-wrote or contributed to three or more page one stories for the paper that month with Jaffe leading the list for most page one bylines.

His colleague, Philip Shishkin, who writes about the war in Iraq and the Middle East, also amassed four page one stories in September, however in the case of two articles he just contributed and was not afforded a true byline.
