Dow Jones/WSJ seeking Southeast Asia bureau chief

Matt Murray, the international editor and deputy managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, sent out the following open staff position on Thursday afternoon:

Dow Jones Newswires and the Wall Street Journal are seeking a bureau chief for Southeast Asia, to marshal our combined resources and set the agenda for some of the most compelling, colorful, and important economic and political stories on the Asian continent and, indeed, the world.

The fast-growing nations of the region range from entrenched dictatorships and closed markets to burgeoning democracies and totems of capitalism and investment. All are attempting to navigate a region increasingly tilted toward China and subject to the ever-faster flows of investment and ideas.

Central to the job is bringing this story to our many audiences across our many platforms– in real time, online in stories and blogs, on video, over newswires and in print – through exclusives and prime insights on the economies and financial markets we cover. Particularly important is dominating all news of foreign exchange and macroeconomics in a region where both are prime forces. But along with that come a range of great stories on many levels, from the emergence of Indonesia as an economic powerhouse to the challenge of unearthing the best curries in Chiang Mai, and all the tales that lie in between.

Besides curiosity, writing and reporting talent and a nose for great stories, the ideal candidate will bring deep and varied experience in real-time news and broader business or political coverage; a multimedia bent would also be welcome. The new chief should have a successful background in managing large and diverse staffs, preferably across locales. Southeast Asian experience is highly desirable, relevant languages a definite plus.

We envision the job being based in Jakarta. Candidates should apply to all three of the following editors:

Jason Rogers, Senior Editor, Dow Jones Newswires/Asia-Pacific (jason.rogers@dowjones.com)

Matt Murray, Deputy Managing Editor, The Wall Street Journal (matt.murray@wsj.com)

Almar Latour, Editor in Chief, The Wall Street Journal Asia (almar.latour@wsj.com)
