Dow Jones Newswires seeks to develop new products

TALKING BIZ NEWS EXCLUSIVE

Wall Street Journal managing editor Robert Thomson, who also serves as editor in chief of Dow Jones & Co., sent out the following e-mail to the staff on Friday afternoon:

“We are reorganizing the editorial leadership at Dow Jones Newswires to enable us to develop new global products as part of our expansion of offerings to specialist readers. Rick Stine will lead this crucial effort for the editorial group. He’s extremely well qualified for the role, having had a 27-year career at Newswires, including stints as a debt reporter and equities editor; managing editor for North American equities; and, since 2005, Americas senior editor. When it comes to outwitting the opposition, there is no person better qualified than ‘Tricky Ricky.’

Gren ‘The Man’ Manuel and Phyllis ‘Perfect’ Plitch will work closely with Rick on product development. Since 2007, Gren has overseen EMEA news coverage as editor, EMEA news. In his 10 years at Dow Jones, he has worked as a Hong Kong-based reporter for The Wall Street Journal Asia; won a Clabby Award as a Newswires reporter in London; and was managing editor for EMEA equities coverage. He will continue in his current role supervising EMEA news coverage while devoting a good portion of his time to product-development duties. Phyllis, managing editor for investment management and liaison to sales and trading, also will spend a good part of her time on key product development efforts. Phyllis rejoined Dow Jones after a two-year stint with Moody’s Investors Service after serving as a SABEW-award-winning equities reporter and columnist for Dow Jones for 10 years.

“To allow Rick to spend time on product development, Gabriella ‘Full Ahead’ Stern will assume responsibility for some of the Americas reporting teams. Gabby, who will continue in her role as senior editor for global news coverage and senior Newswires representative on the New York news Hub, will supervise Linda Fung, managing editor for North American equities; Doug Cameron, Chicago bureau chief; John Moritsugu, managing editor for Dow Jones Canada; Charlie Roth, assistant managing editor for Latin America; and Rob Wells, Washington bureau chief. Before moving to New York in June 2009, Gabby spent three years as senior editor, Asia-Pacific, and six years as senior editor, EMEA. In her 19 years at Dow Jones, Gabby also worked in Detroit, Pittsburgh and New York as reporter and bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal.

“Rick will continue to supervise Eduardo Kaplan, managing editor for Americas money; Steve Wisnefski, managing editor for Americas resources; and Bart Fraust, managing editor of the Americas copy desk. The editors of our most recently developed products — Brian Cronk, managing editor for wealth management, and Adam Smallman, London-based managing editor for investment banking, will now report to Rick.”
