Dow Jones Media Group names EE for data, graphics and visuals

Almar Latour, the head of Dow Jones Media Group, sent out the following announcement:

Colleagues,

I’m pleased to announce that Sarah Squire is appointed Executive Editor for Data, Graphics and Visuals for Dow Jones Media Group.

In this newly created position, Sarah will be responsible for developing the digital graphics and visual strategy for new initiatives, startups and publications such as MarketWatch, Barron’s and Financial News, all part of The Wall Street Journal Digital Network.  She will have wide-ranging responsibility and sweeping creative license to drive visual change across the DJ Media newsroom, including pursuing new story-telling techniques. She will work directly with engineers, reporters, editors and our commercial team. She will also build out a new team of data and graphics specialists that will report to her. She will report to me.

Sarah is extremely accomplished in her field and will bring unbridled creativity and an ambitious vision to her new job. During her time as Visual Editor for Arena, Off Duty, Mansion and Review, she created and helped create some of the most popular Wall Street Journal interactive graphics. She also built many newsroom tools that are widely used by journalists at WSJ.

Examples of work she helped create include the  “Are you Good Enough to Be a Tennis Line Judge?”interactive for the U.S. Open, a rare project that was technically innovative, informative and immensely popular with users. She also built a tool to include short, autoplaying videos in articles.  She produced a story written in emojis and led the production and design of some of the first immersive stories from the feature sections.  She also built a new tool to display 360-degree photos (check it out on mobile)  and designed a special page to display panoramas (again, mobile).

Sarah won Awards of Excellence from the Society of News Design digital competition for her portfolio in 2015 and two of her projects. She previously worked at MarketWatch, where she crafted graphics such as the cord-cutting calculator. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan (#GoBlue). In her spare time, Sarah runs social media and publicity for a Scottish Terrier.

Please join me in congratulating Sarah and wishing her luck in her great new assignment.
