Detroit News names new business editor

TALKING BIZ NEWS EXCLUSIVE

Jon Wolman, the editor and publisher of the Detroit News, sent out the following announcement to the staff on Tuesday:

We’re pleased to announce that Joanna Firestone has been appointed Business Editor, succeeding Sue Carney.

Joanna brings broad experience to her new assignment. After graduating from MSU in 1972, she reported for a small chain of Michigan newspapers and was with UPI for seven years as state editor and Lansing bureau chief. She joined The News in 1981 as a political writer and has served as Lansing bureau chief and as editor in charge of our City Hall coverage. Joanna left the News to be assistant managing editor of the Rockford Journal. On her return, she was a mainstay at Metro. She has been in business for two years, most recently as auto editor.

Joanna is married and has a 17-year-old son.

Chris Roush

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
