Detroit News hires biz reporter to cover casinos, retail

Joanna Firestone, the business editor at the Detroit News, sent the following internal announcement about a new hire:

Karl Henkel has joined the Business desk covering retail, the big non-automotive companies in Michigan and casinos. He previously worked as a business reporter for the Youngstown (Ohio) Vindicator where he covered GM’s Lordstown factories and small business. Prior to that assignment, he had served as a regional beat reporter covering schools, small business and consumer trends.

A graduate of Wayne State University, he is a former freelance writer and stringer for The News. He also had internships at Greater Media Detroit’s WRIF-FM and WJBK-TV in Southfield.

The Center Line native is living in downtown Detroit, is an avid baseball fan, health food nut and microbrew connoisseur.

Chris Roush

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
