Dallas Morning News biz reporter Cowan hired by NY Times

Jill Cowan

Jill Cowan, who has covered the Texas economy for the Dallas Morning News since February 2016, has been hired by The New York Times to to cover California.

Morning News business editor Paul O’Donnell sent out the following announcement on Monday:

All,

We’re saddened to report that Jill Cowan will be leaving us in November to join the staff of the New York Times.

Jill will become the producer and writer of the Times’ daily newsletter tailored for California. As a California native, it’s the best of both worlds for Jill. She gets to return home and work for the Times.

Her hiring was announced this morning to Times newsletter readers. Here’s the link to her intro to newsletter subscribers:

In her 2+ years at The News, Jill wrote a steady stream of high-impact stories about the Dallas-Fort Worth economy and demographic changes taking place in our region. Her enterprise work ranged from how tax incentives are being used  to the fate of Twin Peaks and similarly styled restaurants in the #MeToo era.

She also mastered the art of media partnerships, collaborating with both the Texas Tribune and the Guardian on significant stories during her tenure here. And she was the face of our successful personal finance call-in last year with NBCDFW, including a three-hour Facebook Live.

Jill is on a reporting fellowship in Japan through the end of this month and will complete her stories on Toyota when she returns. The Times patiently agreed to allow her to fulfill her fellowship before starting her new duties.

Please join me in congratulating Jill. We know she’ll make an immediate impact in her home state.
