Retiring Dallas airline reporter: Time to stop eating at Golden Corral

Terry MaxonTerry Maxon, the airlines reporter at the Dallas Morning News, says goodbye to his readers with some remembrances from his 42-year career.

Maxon writes, “1. My job has been amazingly simple. I find out something and then report it. And then I find out something else and report it, too.

“2. Doing the Airline Biz blog has been the most rewarding thing I’ve done in my 42½ years as a reporter.

“3. I never had enough sources, didn’t make enough calls, missed obvious things going on under my nose, didn’t write well enough, ignored stories I probably should have pursued, had a hard time remembering names and faces, wasn’t excited enough by new airplanes, took too long to produce a story, wasn’t kind enough to my colleagues, ate badly and often and kept a messy desk. I would have brought this up earlier, but now I’m not worried about my annual performance review.

“4. The reason I’ve decided to retire? It’s like eating at Golden Corral. At some point, you say, ‘It’s been good but I’ve had enough.'”
