Matthew Flamm, a senior reporter at Crain’s New York Business covering media, technology and transportation, plans to retire from the publication after 16 years.
His last day will be Friday.
“It’s been great working here,” said Flamm in a phone conversation. “This has been a really great place to be a writer and a reporter. I’ve gotten the chance to cover a lot of different things, from natural gas line controversies to Uber and Lyft taxis, cannabis legislation. I’ve been lucky, and I’m still lucky because I am going out on my own terms.”
He plans to do some freelancing, including for Crain’s.
“I’m old enough to start taking Social Security, and I’ve been doing this for 16 years,” he said. “But I still have enough energy to do other things too now. I don’t want to wait another five years when I may not be. I’m at a point where I can still try new things. I feel like I will sleep better.”
Flamm joined Crain’s New York in January 2004, hired by longtime editor Greg David, after freelancing for the paper.
Flamm holds a bachelor’s degree from Cal-Berkeley and a master of fine arts in poetry from Columbia University. He worked briefly in book publishing, and then started freelancing as a radio reporter for the CBC from New York.
He also worked on the entertainment desk of the New York Post and wrote a weekly column for Entertainment Weekly on book publishing.
Flamm also freelanced for the New York Times Book Review, Newsday and other publications before joining Crain’s full time.

I was lucky to work alongside Matt at Crain's from 2005 to 2019, first as a fellow reporter and later as one of his editors. He has a combination of knowledge, skill and humility that is rare in our business —and probably every other field as well.
