Colorado paper kills weekly business newspaper

The Aspen Daily News shelved its weekly business journal this week in response to the mind-numbing recession that continues to take its toll, writes Troy Hooper.

Hooper writes, “The final edition of Mountain Business Journal, a free weekly that was inserted in the Aspen Daily News every Wednesday and distributed in newspaper boxes throughout the Roaring Fork Valley, came out this week.

“Advertising that had long supported the product began to dry up as the recession deepened, rendering the weekly no longer economically viable, according to Aspen Daily News Publisher David Cook, who added he hopes to bring it back whenever business rebounds.

“The loss of Mountain Business Journal, which debuted in 2005, means this will be the first time in decades the Aspen Daily News has not published a separate weekly newspaper dedicated to business coverage. Before MBJ, the paper published a business weekly called Mountain Marketplace, which debuted in 1999, and before that it was High Country Real Estate, which started in the early ’90s.”
