CNBC hires Wayland to cover auto beat

Michael Wayland is joining CNBC in July from Automotive News to cover the global auto industry, according to an email to CNBC staffers on Friday.

Michael Wayland

It stated:

[Michael] will be based in Detroit and focus on all the news coming out of global automakers such as General Motors, Ford and Toyota. He will report on everything from big earnings surprises to assembly plant closings to new product announcements.

Michael comes to CNBC.com from Automotive News where he spent the last two-plus years writing about GM and labor relations. In addition to reporting on GM’s global business operations, he led coverage of the U.S. Department of Justice’s ongoing corruption probe into the misuse of training-center funds involving the UAW and Fiat Chrysler.

He previously served as a beat reporter on Fiat Chrysler and the UAW for The Detroit News. He started his career in Michigan with Booth Newspapers and MLive Media Group.

Wayland has a bachelor’s degree in English and journalism from Central Michigan University.
