After spending 15 years at the Asheville Citizen Times, news director Katie Wadington will leave her post this month for a new role at USA Today. There, she will be working on the politics team as an editor on a new project that will involve the entire USA Today network.
Starting as assistant copy desk chief in 2005, Wadington worked her way up to become news director of the publication. During her journey, she held the posts of business editor and news editor among other positions.
Wadington was also the editor of WNC Parent magazine since 2010.
“The Citizen Times welcomed me when we moved to Asheville from Chicago, and I’ve been fortunate to have been given the flexibility to raise a family while working in a career that I love,” Wadington said. “This move is bittersweet for sure, but I’m looking forward to a new adventure on a national level. I’ve worked with so many talented colleagues at the Citizen Times, and I’ll miss interacting with them each day.”
Under her leadership, the publication received more than 60 NC Press Association awards. In 2017, the paper was awarded a first place General Excellence honor in the category that includes the largest papers in the state.
Editors Casey Blake and Todd Runkle will head up the news team after Wadington’s departure mid-March.
