Ely Portillo, who covers real estate and development for the Charlotte Observer, is moving to the local government and politics beat.
Cassie Cope of the Observer will be taking over the beat on an interim basis. She has been covering health care and energy.
“I’m looking forward to trying something new, but I’ve definitely enjoyed reporting on development and real estate,” said Portillo.
He joined the Observer in July 2009, first as a crime and and courts reporter. He joined the business news desk in August 2010 as a retail and general assignment business reporter. He covered companies such as Lowe’s and Family Dollar.
Portillo is a graduate of Harvard University.
