There’s been a heavier-than-usual changeover with the staff at the Triangle Business Journal, which operates in Raleigh, in the past two months.
In the newsroom, longtime staff writer Lee Weisbecker, who covered finance and state government, left in July. His work had won awards from Investigative Reporters and Editors and the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. Weisbecker could not be reached for comment.
Another staff writer, Chris Bagley, left earlier this month to attend law school at UNC-Chapel Hill. Bagley covered the legal-services industry, transportation and utilities. Bagley had been at the paper for slightly more than two years.
Those moves followed the retirement of managing editor Dale Gibson, who left earlier this month. He was replaced by Rebecca Troyer, the opinion editor of The Daily Press in Newport News, Va. She started work last week.
In addition, Cecily Durrett, the audience development director for the American City Business Journals paper, left in July and is now working for the local Prudential real estate office, according to her LinkedIn profile.
And Elizabeth Horning, a circulation sales executive who worked for Durrett in running events for the paper, left last week as well. Two ad sales people have also recently left, according to multiple sources.
The publisher, Bryan Hamilton, gave Talking Biz News the following statement:
Yes, we have had several recent changes in our personnel, some driven by personal needs of the employee, others planned by the needs we have to adapt to our rapidly changing industry and competitive marketplace. We’re going through a transformation in how we deliver the news to ensure we continue to earn the loyalty of our readers.
