Cassidy becomes new Mercury News business columnist

Mike Cassidy, a metro columnist for the San Jose Mercury News, is becoming the paper’s business columnist, replacing Vindu Goel, who left for the New York Times.

Cassidy wrote, “Change is always exciting and sometimes painful. Earlier this month, 20 talented journalists left the paper by choice or by layoff. I miss them and you might, too.

“But those of us who believe in newspapers think of them as a public trust. We are here to tell you the stories you need to know or want to know. That never stops.

“And so, I’m on to the next thing. Aren’t I daring — going from writing a column for the local section to writing a column for the Business section? I hope you’ll be daring and follow me there.”

Cassidy was part of the Mercury News team that was a Loeb finalist in 2006 for its coverage of Hewlett-Packard. The team also won a SABEW Best in Business Award.
