Kate Hopwood

Canadian Press editor in chief Andrea Baillie sent out the following announcement to the staff:

Another new CP manager to announce: I’m delighted to tell you that Kate Hopwood will be our new Business editor.

Kate comes to us from the Globe and Mail, where she is known as a go-to staffer at the Report on Business who has a knack for focusing stories, generating discussion, setting the daily news agenda and working with reporters to ensure their stories are as strong as possible.

Over nearly a decade, her various roles at ROB have included lead programmer, front page editor and copy editor. Prior to that she had stints at the Timmins Daily Press, Guelph Mercury and Burlington Post.

As a long-time consumer of the CP wire, she’s excited to be working with us and is looking forward to driving our file, working with reporters to steer our coverage in new and innovative directions, while recognizing clients’ needs for a steady source of reliable daily news.

Kate will bring her wealth of experience in business journalism, financial acumen and passion for making business stories accessible for all readers to add new vibrancy to our already stellar file.

A self-described CMS nerd, Kate will guide the business department at a pivotal time for CP as we embark on several new digital projects, including a highly anticipated revamp of our CMS that will integrate and enhance our coverage.

I’d also like to thank the unflappable Jody White for his steady hand in keeping the ship running over the last two months (and for the duration of Sunny’s mat leave prior to that).

Please join me in welcoming Kate to the CP fold. Her first day will be Nov. 25.
