California paper cuts standalone business section

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, a New York Times Co., paper, said Sunday that it will cut its standalone business section except on Sundays.

An editor’s note stated, “Business news will appear in the local news section and will be a separate section only on Sunday. Especially in these times, we know you rely on our staff to provide you the most comprehensive news about the local economy so we are not reducing either the coverage or the space devoted to this crucial coverage.

“But business news, and many other features, will move around. We are creating a new section called Find It with a marketplace concept combining advertising and some of the things most familiar to the newspaper reading routine — comics, puzzles and advice columns.

“So much of reading a newspaper is about the daily ritual of opening the paper and looking for your favorite things. And this week is going to be disorienting because they will be out of place. The most obvious change will be tomorrow when the Monday paper goes to two sections. But we will walk you through that tomorrow and every day this week as we all adjust to what is different.”
