BusinessWeek news editor leaves for NYT Sunday section

Patricia Kranz, the national news editor at BusinessWeek, is leaving the glossy to become deputy editor of the New York Times Sunday Business section, according to a memo posted on the Romenesko site.

The memo from Sunday Business editor Timothy O’Brien stated, “Patty is a complete pro, described by colleagues at BusinessWeek and admirers at publications elsewhere (including Ron Stodghill and Paula Dwyer in our shop) as a gifted, enthusiastic editor and team player. She is energetic and smart, with a great eye for news and features as well as a wide-ranging curiosity. Patty joined BusinessWeek in 1993 as a Moscow correspondent, and became Moscow bureau chief three years later. After that she became the magazine’s Europe editor and then editor of BusinessWeek’s European edition. She was named national news editor in 2005.

“Patty has an undergraduate degree in European history and French from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University. She also notes that she ‘doesn’t like to sit still.’ In Moscow, she taught aerobics at the U.S. embassy; she met her husband swing dancing at Swing 46, a club near the Times; and she loves to golf. (Last June, there was a picture in Sunday Styles of Patty and her husband dancing at the opening night of MidSummer Night Swing at Lincoln Center).
