Adam Bryant of The New York Times sent out the following to his colleagues:
Friends — I’m taking the buyout, as well.
Not an easy decision, of course, as the roots go deep at The Times. I’ve been here for 18 years in all (with a six-year detour to write and edit at Newsweek in the middle of that stretch), and have experienced all the highs that one can hope for at The Times, working as a reporter in BizDay for many years, then worked as an editor in BizDay and National, running the How We Live desk, helping with the Innovation Report, overseeing our climate coverage, and working for the last year as the editorial director of our conferences operation.
Over the last decade, I’ve also done more than 500 Corner Office interviews, written a couple of books based on the themes that emerged from all those conversations, and I’ve been teaching a leadership course at Columbia for several years. It feels like the right time to take a leap and build on that work.
Over my years at The Times, I’ve had the chance to work on thousands of stories as a reporter and editor. But what matters most has been the opportunity to work alongside so many talented and wicked-smart journalists. How many people get the chance to do what we all do — hard work, fun work, work that matters?
I’ll be around through the end of October. See you around the campus …
