British biz journalist's sentencing deferred

January 21, 2006

James Hipwell, a business journalist for the Daily Mirror in England, wrote the City Slickers column in which certain stocks were mentioned. Apparently he and the other reporter who wrote the column often traded in the stocks before and after the column appeared. Hipwell’s sentence was deferred on Friday because of poor health.

The Independent reports: “Anil Bhoyrul, the co-author of the Mirror’s City Slickers column, avoided a prison sentence by pleading guilty to the charges in July last year. He was ordered to complete 180 hours of community service, while Terry Shepherd, a day trader found guilty of conspiring with the pair, was sentenced to three months in jail.”
