In his column Tuesday, Syre recounted how is first column in 1995 advised readers to steer clear of investing in the Boston Beer Co. initial public offering. He called it “an overpriced sucker’s bet.” The stock, however, eventually made founder Jim Koch a billionaire and others rich.
“You can’t get them all right, but I think I was on the mark most of the time,” wrote Syre. He later added, “Thanks to so many sources and colleagues for your help over the years. And most of all, thank you for reading.”
Larry Edelman, the business editor of the Globe, told Talking Biz News: “After a remarkable 20-year run as a columnist, reporter and editor here, Steve is taking a buyout. It’s a huge loss for us, but we wish him all the best as he starts a new phase of his career.”
He joined the Globe in 1995 and previously wrote a financial column in the Boston Herald.
In an email to Talking Biz News, Syre wrote, “I’ve been lucky to have a great job for 20 years. How many people can really say that? I’ll miss the Globe but I’m excited to try some new things — among them, my wife and I opened a bakery in the Boston suburb of Duxbury, Mass., a few weeks ago.”
