Stephen Kleege, longtime business journalist and currently executive editor of Bond Buyer, is retiring at the end of the year.

His last day will be Dec. 31.

Kleege is best known for his work at National Thrift News in the late 1980s covering the collapse of the savings and loan industry, including the scoop on the Keating Five, which made Rolling Stone’s “Top Ten Political Scandals” list.

He also wrote article on the hidden costs of tax breaks in the S&L bailout and edited a special section geared to a general audience, both cited in the newspaper’s 1988 Polk Award for financial reporting.

“I plan to lighten my schedule but keep involved in journalism on a part-time basis, either as a freelance financial editor or a lecturer or mentor,” said Kleege in an email to Talking Biz News.

Kleege has been at Bond Buyer since April 2013. He previously spent nearly 12 years at Bloomberg News, editing real estate, economic and political news.

Kleege also worked for American Banker for 10 years as a senior editor.
