Bloomberg journalist in China resigns

Peter Hirschberg, deputy managing editor of economy and government coverage in Asia, has resigned from Bloomberg News.

Hirschberg worked in the Hong Kong bureau. Other journalists have left Bloomberg’s Hong Kong operations in the past year after the company did not publish stories critical of people connected to the Chinese government.

One of the Bloomberg journalists who left earlier, Michael Forsythe, now works for the New York Times in China.

In an email to Talking Biz News, Hirschberg wrote:

In the almost six years I have been at Bloomberg, I have had the privilege of working with some extraordinarily talented people on some of the most significant news stories across three continents – from Israel’s invasion of Gaza in 2009 to the post-election protests in Iran that same year to environmental degradation in China and the abuse of women in India. I am especially proud of the work we did in lifting the veil on the vast wealth accumulated by the families of China’s ruling elite. These stories, which ventured into uncharted territory, set a new standard for reporting on China’s rulers. It was an honor to have been part of the team that produced this work.
