Bloomberg’s Flavelle hired by NY Times to cover climate

Hannah Fairfield, the climate editor at the New York Times, sent out the following announcement:

I am happy to announce that Christopher Flavelle, a fantastic climate reporter at Bloomberg News, will join The Times as a climate correspondent based in Washington.

Christopher spent nine years at Bloomberg, most recently focusing on climate adaptation, covering the way people, governments and businesses respond (or don’t) to the effects of global warming. He has written about how climate change has sweeping consequences for finance, insurance, real estate, utilities, transportation and other industries.

Christopher’s enterprise pieces have covered how tougher building codes are changing the demographics of coastal America and how the courts decide who owns land that goes underwater. He revealed that many large companies, like Apple and Merck, expect climate change to increase demand for their products. And he explored the scientific quest to develop a climate-proof cow that still tastes good.

Born and raised in Toronto, Christopher has a bachelor’s degree in political science from McGill University and a master’s in international affairs from Columbia University. He brings the number of Canadians on the Climate desk up to three.

He lives in Washington with his wife and three children. Ask him about the time he ran a bar in Bishkek.
