Bloomberg to expand news staff by 10 percent this year

Bloomberg News will expand its 2,300-strong news operation by more than 10 percent this year as news plays a growing role in the content on the electronic system, writes Aline van Duyn of The Financial Times.

Matthew WinklerShe wrote, “The plans to add at least 240 more reporters in 2007 shed light on Bloomberg’s strategy for maintaining an edge over rivals Reuters and Thomson, which have agreed an $18bn merger.”

Later, she wrote, “‘News is an increasingly important part of the Bloomberg business model and an increasingly important driver of [Bloomberg] terminal sales,’ said Matthew Winkler, head of Bloomberg News since its inception in 1990, in an interview with the Financial Times.

“Mr Winkler said he had hired 180 new reporters this year and had plans to add at least another 60, in addition to the 2,300 employed at the end of last year.

“The growth in news staff reflects the rapid growth in the sale of Bloomberg terminals across the globe, which Bloomberg executives say shows no sign of slowing down and which remains particularly strong in Asia.”
