Ryan Gallagher, an investigative journalist at The Intercept, will join Bloomberg Tech as a senior reporter starting Sept. 16.
Gallagher will report to Andy Martin and pursue investigative stories on cybersecurity, surveillance and the world’s largest technology companies.
Throughout his career, Callagher has broken major scoops on the intersection of national security, surveillance and civil liberties. Last year, he broke the story that Google was secretly developing a censored search engine for the Chinese market, touching off internal protests and a furor from legislators that ultimately forced the company to end the so-called Dragonfly project.
Using documents obtained by whistleblower Edward Snowden, he also broke stories on the National Security Agency’s effort to share a massive trove of surveillance data with domestic law enforcement agencies and to use automated systems to install malware on computers, potentially infecting millions worldwide.
Gallagher will be based in Edinburgh.
