Bloomberg News is looking for a managing editor to oversee national coverage and run the day to ensure the coverage reflects the priorities of Bloomberg News and the needs of its terminal customers and web readers.
This position will allow the successful candidate to take on a newsroom leadership role as Bloomberg re-imagines and expands its national coverage. The ideal candidate has a demonstrated ability to lead a team, set the agenda for coverage, improve stories through deft editing, motivate reporters and editors to deliver scoops and enterprise and stay cool in a breaking news environment. This person should be as fluent in calling for a red headline as in conceiving of a Big Take.
Because this is an expanding area of coverage, the successful candidate must be willing to think creatively about what comprises a national story for the Bloomberg audience today and how to deliver that coverage. Knowledge of U.S. politics and national issues is a plus but not a must. More important is the drive to stay ahead of the competition and flexibility in how to approach the news, meaning at times serving different platforms with different story forms.
Being able to motivate and communicate effectively with a team dispersed in national bureaus is essential, as is the ability to collaborate with beat teams around the world and in particular colleagues in Washington, DC, plus Canada and Latin America. Speed, the ability to be a good colleague and a natural excitement about stories also are essential.
