Bloomberg seeks a global business editor in New York

May 2, 2022

Posted by Chris Roush

It’s 7:15 a.m., and the headline has just crossed the wire that Mr. Big is stepping down as CEO of GlobalCorp. for an undisclosed personal matter. The stock is plummeting and investors are searching for clues. Our reporters are crashing the phones trying to figure out what’s going on. And we need someone quick-witted, experienced and confident to start prepping the definitive take on what could be one of the biggest corporate stories of the year.

That person could be you. Bloomberg News is hiring an editor for its U.S. Global Business team. If you enjoy the adrenaline rush of breaking news — piecing together “what, why and how” in a digestible way more quickly than the competition can — this is the job for you. If you like building a story from scratch into a front-page quality read-all, please apply. Features, short-term enterprise?
They’re all part of this role. Imagine helping reporters who have just landed a scoop to get their headlines and story out ahead of our rivals. Think about the ways a good editor can turn decent copy into great copy by pushing reporters for more. Day-in, day-out, this is the kind of job where you have major influence over some of our most-read stories.

What we’re looking for:
An experienced journalist who knows the mechanics of daily news stories, can write and edit quickly on deadline, and has the personal touch required to work with a wide variety of reporters in sometimes stressful and demanding situations. Our ideal candidate is versatile: capable of rifling through filings on quarterly earnings on deadline or organizing and shaping a second-day enterprise story. You’ll work with reporters covering a wide variety of industries, from automobiles and aerospace to consumer goods and media to health care.

We’ll trust you to:

    •   Write and edit breaking news quickly and clearly, build out this-just-in news into big reads, and help reporters plan and execute follow-ups and enterprise.
    •   Maintain communication with our news desk and other parts of the newsroom about our coverage plans
    •   Be comfortable working with veteran reporters and mentoring new talent
        You’ll need to have:
    •   First-rate writing and editing skills
    •   Grace under deadline pressure and openness to feedback
    •   Experience in cross-team collaboration
    •   A record of creativity and innovation
    •   An all hands-on-deck ethos when the going gets busy
    •   Experience covering companies, the economy, retail or labor, or an interest in learning
    •   A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
