David Welch is the new bureau chief. He has been the deputy team leader for auto coverage since January 2015. He has previously been a consumer reporter covering Wal-Mart, a reporter on Bloomberg’s deals team and an auto reporter.
From December 2005 to December 2009, when BusinessWeek was acquired by Bloomberg, Welch was the Detroit bureau chief for the magazine. He joined the magazine in December 1999 after working at the Detroit News and the Dallas Business Journal.
Craig Trudell is the new auto team leader in the United States.
Trudell is currently editor of the auto coverage for Bloomberg in Asia, and he is based in Tokyo. He co-authored a Bloomberg Businessweek cover story on Takata’s airbag crisis in June 2016 and co-authored a December 2014 Businessweek cover story on Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell ambitions, which included a rare interview with company president Akio Toyoda.
He previously reported on GM, Ford and Chrysler from Detroit for three and a half years. Trudell joined Bloomberg in January 2010.
