Bloomberg Markets magazine’s September 2010 issue article “Profiting From Fallen Soldiers” by senior writer David Evans has won the American Bar Association’s Silver Gavel Award in the magazine category.
“Profiting From Fallen Soldiers” exposed how life insurance companies have profited from death benefits owed to families of service members and other government employees, examining causes and consequences.
Bloomberg Markets has won more of the top business and investigative journalism awards in the past 10 years than its competitors combined.
Evans was a finalist in the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. He won the Investigative Reporters and Editors Award in the magazine category for the “Profiting From Fallen Soldiers” article earlier this year.
Meanwhile, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune won the award in the newspaper category for “Hounded: Debtors and the New Breed of Collectors,” which was written by business reporter Chris Serres and computer assisted reporter Glenn Howatt.
The six-part series explored recent changes in the debt collection industry, revealing how people with unpaid bills are being jailed, and examined consumer protection and regulation.
