Bloomberg makes newsroom changes, creates news desks

Bloomberg Editor in Chief John Micklethwait announced the following staff changes and promotions in a global newsroom memo on Friday:

Marty Schenker returns to New York from Washington to become Chief Content Officer. He’ll join the 3-person editorial management committee with Micklethwait and Deputy Editor in Chief Reto Gregori.

Laura Zelenko takes over as head of Standards, Diversity, Talent & Training.

Wes Kosova will oversee U.S. and global government and politics coverage from Washington, and Craig Gordon will take over as Bloomberg’s Washington bureau chief.

John Fraher will lead the Business, Finance and Energy Group from London.

Bloomberg is also establishing three regional “News Desks” to help own stories across platforms, with Adriana Arai running the Asia News Desk from Hong Kong. David Merritt will run the EMEA News Desk from London and Joe Weisenthal runs the Americas News Desk from New York. Julie Alnwick, Rakshita Saluja, David Papadopoulos and Matt Levine join the New York News Desk.

Helder Marinho will become head of local languages and report to Chris Collins.

Simon Kennedy, currently Brexit czar, will join Stephanie Flanders‘ new Bloomberg Economics team as her deputy.

London bureau chief Emma Ross-Thomas becomes the new Brexit czar in London, and David Merritt will cover her bureau chief duties as a new London bureau chief is selected.

Bloomberg TV producer Mindy Massucci will lead the Twitter TV editorial team, and Megan Chu takes on her role as executive producer for Global Operations.

Rachel Wehrspann becomes executive producer for U.S.-based programs.

Regional Editing Hubs will work alongside the News Desks, with David Gillen taking over the U.S., Brian Bremner running the Asia hub, and Jim Hertling running the European hub.

Tim Quinson, former EMEA editor who oversaw coverage of the 2008 financial crisis and following Libor coverage, will become head of Investigative Journalism backed by Bob Blau and Winnie O’Kelley. O’Kelley’s deputy, Heather Smith, takes over leadership of the legal reporters in the business and finance group and is promoted to executive editor.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
