Mark Milian, a technology editor at Bloomberg News overseeing venture capital and startups coverage, sent out the following announcement on Monday:
We’re pleased to announce the addition of two new reporters to the Tech team in San Francisco. Hannah Miller is joining us to cover crypto VCs and startups, and Margi Murphy will cover cybersecurity.
Hannah comes to us from the Information, where she became the site’s first crypto reporter and penned a newsletter on the topic. She broke some big crypto startup deals and scored news-making interviews with founders of Binance and Ethereum. Before the Information, she had stints at CNN, CNBC and a Financial Times unit and got her master’s in business journalism at CUNY under the tutelage of Adjunct Professor Annie Massa.
Hannah’s introduction to crypto came through a random ransomware attack on her aunt. A hacker held her family photos hostage in exchange for $500 in Bitcoin. Now Hannah is the Miller family expert on crypto and answers all of her grandmother’s questions about Dogecoin, which she calls “dog coin.” Hannah moved to Palo Alto last year from the East Coast, where she lived all of her life. She’s still discovering the Bay Area, and her new favorite hangout is Boogaloos in the Mission.
Hannah will work in partnership with Lizette Chapman, who has laid the groundwork for our crypto startups coverage. Together, they will team up with our new, global crypto desk under stacy-marie ishmael and help strengthen our coverage of this beat across the Global Tech team.
Margi will join Bloomberg after several years covering tech at the Telegraph, both in London and San Francisco, where she distinguished herself with a number of scoops and compelling features. She reported on Google and Palantir’s push to embed themselves in the UK’s National Health Service, how Google alters its travel listings depending on commercial partnerships and how a British burglar alarm company found itself at the center of an international human rights scandal.
She also documented her eight months of communal living in San Francisco’s “hacker house.” Since leaving the Telegraph in September, Margi has been working on projects for British magazines, newspapers and production companies, including investigative documentaries on tech.
Hannah starts next week and will report to Mark. Margi will start in early March and report to Andy. Welcome them to the team!
