Joe Pompeo of Politico writes about the debut of Bloomberg Gadfly, a new website that went live Sunday with an initial team of about two dozen journalists devoted to fast-turnaround analysis pieces in the range of 400 to 800 words.
Pompeo writes, “Gadfly is the latest addition to Bloomberg’s journalism empire, which includes Bloomberg News, Bloomberg Businessweek magazine, Bloomberg TV and various other print and digital titles. It is an extension of the company’s opinion venture, Bloomberg View, and its articles will be distributed to subscribers of the high-priced Bloomberg Terminal 15 minutes before they appear free of charge at bloomberg.com/gadfly.
“With an existing bench of established competitors already doing this type of financial commentary, not to mention younger websites like Business Insider, Dealbreaker and Quartz in the mix, Gadfly will have to hustle and differentiate itself in order to build up an audience beyond Bloomberg’s core terminal subscribers.
“Tim O’Brien, executive editor of Bloomberg View and Gadfly, said that Gadfly would be ‘more global’ and cover a wider range of subjects than its competitors while drawing on the deep data and financial information of the Bloomberg Terminal.”
