Bloomberg exec hired by Weather Channel parent

The Weather Co. has hired Christopher Herbert as vice president of strategy and product operations, for its digital division.

Herbert previously worked at Bloomberg Media, where he was head of special projects. In this newly created role, Herbert is responsible for strategy development and execution for the product organization including weather.com, mobile and tablet apps, and Weather Underground. He will report to Cameron Clayton, president of TWC’s digital division.

“Chris will be an integral part The Weather Co. team, working with our brands to develop strategy and support building the category-leading products consumers have come to expect from The Weather Channel such as our mobile and tablet apps,” said Clayton in a statement.

As head of special projects for Bloomberg Media, Herbert oversaw projects for the media group across web, mobile, television, magazines, radio and syndication, and he led its digital video initiative. Previously he worked at Bloomberg LP in corporate strategy and business development, with a primary focus on the news and media groups.

Prior to his time at Bloomberg, Herbert was a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Co., serving a range of media clients in cable, newspapers and sports. He also served as an analyst for Kroll Zolfo Cooper in the corporate advisory and restructuring group, and as special assistant to the owner for the Bridgeport Bluefish, a minor league baseball team where he previously worked as ticketing manager. He helped advise the club and prepare it to be sold.

He received an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and a bachelor’s degree in economics and American literature from Middlebury College. Herbert will be based at TWC’s headquarters in Atlanta,  where he will relocate with his family from Connecticut.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
