Birmingham weekly hires new health care reporter

Ben Piper has joined the Birmingham Business Journal to cover health care and technology.

He comes to the American City Business Journals paper after two and a half years with the Hattiesburg American. Piper is a 2007 graduate of the University of Mississippi.

He replaces Jimmy DeButts, who was promoted within the company to associate editor of the Baltimore Business Journal.

DeButts joined the Birmingham Business Journal three and half years ago. During his tenure, he won numerous for breaking news and investigative reporting. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, DeButts previously covered Auburn sports for the Birmingham Post-Herald.

In Baltimore, as asociate editor, he will be in charge of the publication’s special reports and special publications.
