Birmingham Biz Journal hires O’Leary to cover banking and legal beat

The Birmingham Business Journal has hired A.J. O’Leary to cover the banking and legal beat.

Managing editor Angel Coker writes, “O’Leary most recently was managing editor of the Altavista Journal in Virginia where he wrote and edited content for Altavista, Brookneal and all of Campbell County. He began that role in July 2020.

“While at the Virginia newspaper, O’Leary provided coverage of everything from sports to government to breaking news and everything in between. He also took photographs and handled multimedia efforts.

“O’Leary gained valuable journalism experience as well while at his college’s student newspaper where he covered university news such as the end of UNC’s Business Journalism program and the search for a new UNC System president.”

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
