Baltimore Sun losing standalone business section

The Baltimore Sun’s standalone business section will be eliminated by the end of the month, becoming the second Tribune paper to cut its business section.

The Hartford Courant announced this weekend that it would cut its business section.

Assistant managing editor for business Bernie Kohn declined to comment. But sources tell Talking Biz News that the Sun will give business news two pages inside another section.

The Sunday consumer section will survive as a standalone section.

Other metro dailies that have cut their standalone business sections in the past year include the The (Raleigh) News & Observer, Denver Post, Orange County Register, Cincinnati Enquirer, Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch, St. Petersburg Times, Reno (Nev.) Gazette-Journal, Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal, Monterey (Calif.) Herald, Palm Beach Post and Akron (Ohio) Beacon-Journal.

The San Francisco Chronicle has cut its standalone business section on Mondays and Tuesdays.

This happened also when I was a business reporter at BaltSun durin the 90-91 recession. Feels more permanent this time. And at times it has been a very good business section, too. But the logic of a local business section collapses any time you do a story about a company of any size: The analysts are in NY, the financiers are in NY or the Vallrey, the competitors and the customers could be anywhere. There's no edge for a local player on anything but covering commercial real estate. Maybe not even there any more.
