Aviation Week names new editor

Aviation Week announced that Joseph C. Anselmo, 45, will become the new editor in chief, leading a team of aerospace and defense journalists across the U.S., Europe and the Asia-Pacific.

He will succeed Anthony L. Velocci, Jr., who is retiring Dec. 31 following a 23-year career with Aviation Week. Anselmo will immediately begin phasing into his new role.

Anselmo has 23 years of experience as an editor and reporter, including 15 years with Aviation Week. Most recently, he was managing editor of a global team of Aviation Week’s senior writers.

In his dual role as senior business editor, Anelsmo regularly interacted with industry leaders and top executives and wrote the weekly Up Front column. He has led numerous initiatives for Aviation Week in media and events — including the annual Top-Performing Companies study and multimedia air show coverage — and plays a key role in Aviation Week’s ongoing transition to digital media.

Anselmo joined Aviation Week early in his career as a space reporter for Aerospace Daily and was promoted in 1995 to space technology editor at AW&ST, where he covered space technology, policy, military and business around the globe.

In 2000, he joined the Washington Post Co. as managing editor of Washington Techway, a new technology business magazine. Anselmo later covered defense and space issues on Capitol Hill for Congressional Quarterly before re-joining AW&ST as business editor in 2004.

He has won three Aerospace Journalist of the Year Awards for his reporting and was elected three times to the National Press Club’s Board of Governors, where he also served one term as chairman. A native of Cleveland, Anselmo is a 1989 graduate of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
