He joined Automotive News in 1984 as a reporter in Detroit and was later Europe editor and Asia editor. Johnson was also the founding editor of Automotive News Europe in 1995 before returning to the States in 2003.

“The guy is by far the best editor and writer I’ve ever worked with, and a complete mensch,” wrote Larry Vellequette, who covers Volkswagen/Audi and Toyota for Automotive News, on Twitter. “His touch is on every page and paragraph of AN every week. And we’re the better for it.”

Brent Snavely, a former auto reporter, wrote, “Over a decade ago Rick helped edit a story of mine that went page 1 for AN and I experienced that smart editing and story telling talent. It was a always a pleasure to work with him.”

Jamie Butters will succeed Johnson overseeing the publication.
