Australian paper owned by Murdoch examines WSJ changes

Jane Schulze, the media editor of The Australian, writes Monday about changes at The Wall Street Journal under News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch.

Schulze writes, “When News bought Dow Jones (publisher of The Wall Street Journal) there were numerous reports that the paper’s journalists would be resistant to change.

“Thomson says the crisis in the US newspaper industry has ‘concentrated the minds of the journalists’ but reports of disenchantment were overblown.

“‘There were some great people at the Journal and they are doing well and we have invested more authority with them. And we brought in some people whose expertise is clear to all. So the combination of the new and the old has made a great paper greater.

“‘And we have changed the paper quite a bit — and there’s some more to come — but the feedback the journalists get when they speak to friends or contacts is almost entirely positive.'”
