Cathy Panagoulias, a deputy managing editor at The Wall Street Journal, plans to retire from the paper in July, becoming the latest top editor to leave the business daily.
Panagoulias has been in charge of staffing and the internship program in recent years, among other duties.
She served as the Journal’s national editor, running all U.S. news coverage from 1995 to 2000, and supervised technology coverage before that for five years.
On Sept. 11, 2001 she helped put out the edition that won the Pulitzer for breaking news and spent much of the next year managing the logistics involved in running a paper without a permanent newsroom.
She joined the Journal’s monitor desk in 1976, moving to the copy desk in 1978 and to The Asian Wall Street Journal’s copy desk in Hong Kong later that year. She also worked on the foreign desk, supervised the monitor desk and held a wide range of positions on the news desk including layout editor, deputy national editor, three-star editor and news editor for health and science
She is a graduate of Cornell University, where she studied history and Mandarin.
