American Banker hires new editor from Forbes

Neil Weinberg has been named editor in chief of American Banker, the publication announced Tuesday.

Weinberg will join American Banker on May 24, following a long and successful tenure at Forbes Media, where he rose to the level of executive editor. In that role, Weinberg edited Forbes.com’s Personal Finance channel and related blogs, as well as Forbes magazine’s Money & Investing section. Weinberg is also a cast member on the weekly TV talk show “Forbes on Fox.”

At American Banker, Weinberg will oversee the editorial operations of the flagship brand, including its website at AmericanBanker.com and its 175-year-old daily publication. His mission includes guiding the staff in a transition to a digital-first content model, developing rich and social media content, building online audience engagement, and enhancing the value of the core content American Banker’s paid subscribers demand.

“Neil is a thoughtful and creative editor who brings the right experience and skills to make an impact in this market,” said Rich Melville, editorial director for SourceMedia’s Banking and Capital Markets Group, in a statement. “His work at Forbes.com integrating a group of digital and print journalists, and galvanizing them to engage an online audience, is directly relevant to the mission we have set for ourselves at American Banker.”

“American Banker is a storied brand in the financial community,” Weinberg said in a statement. “It will be a thrill and an honor to help move its unparalleled industry insights into a more digital world.”

Weinberg fills the position vacated by Barbara Rehm, who stepped down to take the role of editor at large in 2010. Rehm writes a weekly column for American Banker.
