AME for Money & Business at US News promoted to ME

Tim Smart, the assistant managing editor for Money & Business at US News & World Report, has been promoted to managing editor at the weekly magazine, according to a release.

The promotion is part of a restructuring under new editor Brian Kelly. Margaret Mannix, assistant managing editor for health, is also named a managing editor.

“At this critical juncture for all of us in journalism, I am delighted to have such strong leadership and vision as we look to integrate further our Web and print content and functions,” said Kelly in a release.  “Our goal will be to maintain and strengthen our solid position as a trusted source of accurate, concise information consumers need to make huge life decisions.”

Smart, a seasoned business journalist with more than 25 years experience, started at U.S. News in late 1999 as deputy editor for News You Can Use.  In 2001, he assumed his current position overseeing the online and print version of the Money & Business section.

His prior reporting experience includes two years at the Washington Post (1997-1999) and 10 years at Business Week (1987-1997).  He started his career at Florida dailies: St. Petersburg Times (1979-1981), Miami Herald (1981-1984), and Orlando Sentinel (1985-1987).  Smart comments frequently on CNN, C-SPAN, MSNBC, Retirement Living TV, and numerous radio stations.  He has a bachelor’s of science in journalism from the University of Florida.

Disclosure: Smart and I comprised the Connecticut bureau for Business Week in 1993-94, and I consider him a friend.
