May Ortega is the new technology and health care reporter at Albquerque Business First, an American City Business Journals newspaper.
Ortega writes, “Breaking news, crime, education — I’ve covered a little of everything throughout my still-early career, but none of it quite compares to business writing. This is a breed of news that demands savvy in several spheres, so it’s a good thing that I’ve developed an affinity for it. When I dedicate myself to my work, I am all in.
“My first summer gig was with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, where I discovered how exciting covering business can be and how one country can send economic ripples around the globe. After that, my hometown paper, The Monitor in McAllen, Texas, hired me as a part-time crime and breaking news reporter while I finished school. It was there that I truly learned what it meant to sink or swim, and that swimming fast is essential to news writing.
“An internship with The Gazette in Colorado Springs allowed me to dive into the infinity pool of business writing, focusing on tech, small business and more. That internship helped me decide I wanted to be a business reporter.
“Money makes the world go ’round, and that spinning comes in many forms. Technology is one of my favorite aspects of this field, mainly because it offers a window into what the future may hold. And I’d be lying if I said that learning from innovators didn’t amaze me time and time again; the capability of the human mind, applied to tech, is a beautiful thing.”
