Albuquerque biz editor departs on a high note

Mike Murphy, the business editor of the Albuquerque Journal for the past 16 years who is moving to the assistant metro editor slot, writes Monday about the section’s accomplishments during his tenure.

Murphy writes, “I am moving off the business desk after a year of some remarkable improvements.

:Consider:

• We launched one of the deepest and most robust online business sections in the country this time last year and it provides a complete AP business report Monday through Friday, plus all locally reported business stories from Business Outlook, Money and other sections, all our daily breaking and updated stories, in an easy-to-access, search and just read format.

• We are publishing online more than 150 complete stories every week, close to 8,000 in the past year since we launched covering every aspect of world, national and local business news.

• Our online business site drew 56,795 pageviews in July of 2013 and zoomed up 263 percent to 205,952 pageviews this past July.

• We have been blessed with outstanding journalists Winthrop Quigley, Richard Metcalf, Jessica Dyer and Kevin Robinson-Avila, and their expertise in health-care economics to commercial development to the newest retail and the best in tech is unmatched in the state of New Mexico.

• We redesigned both the content and look of Business Outlook, adding some new columnists and reporters to an already strong lineup, and really making it easier to look at and to read. It is a fine-looking pub.

• We added new Assistant Business Editor Nick Pappas (Mr. Scam of the Week columnist) about a year ago and he has led our digital improvement initiative and the numbers tell how well he has done in that job.”
