We are pleased to announce that Stephen J. Adler, president and editor in chief of Reuters, has agreed to become the next chair of the Columbia Journalism Review’s Board of Overseers. A board member since 2011, Steve has been a valuable contributor and unfailing supporter of CJR and its mission. He also runs one of the largest news organizations in the world, with some 2,500 journalists in 200 locations. Prior to Reuters, Steve was the editor of Businessweek, and led the publication to numerous awards. Earlier in his career, Steve held leadership positions at The Wall Street Journal and The American Lawyer. He is also an accomplished author. We are grateful he is taking time from his busy life to devote to CJR. We look forward to working with him as we move into a significant new stage of CJR’s life in the years ahead.
We want to thank outgoing chairman Neil Barsky for his leadership and commitment to CJR these past five years. Neil is the founding chairman of the board, and has helped to guide CJR through a period of great change. A graduate of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism (class of ‘84), Neil has had a storied career in both journalism and the financial sector. He is also the founder and chairman of The Marshall Project, a remarkably successful nonprofit news organization covering America’s criminal justice system. His contributions to CJR have been invaluable, and we are deeply appreciative.
