A Sunday focus on personal finance

John Corrigan, the deputy business editor of the Los Angeles Times, notes that the paper’s Sunday business section has undergone an overhaul in recent months, and they’re happy with the results.

“We completely revamped the Sunday pages this year to focus on personal finance and consumer topics, and that’s been a big hit with readers judging by the increased email traffic and web hits we’re getting,” says Corrigan.

“The first thing you will notice is the outstanding page design engineered by Derek Simmons. Week after week, Derek comes up with a cover that is bold, clean and visually arresting.

“Of course, he has a lot of help from our first-rate photo and graphics departments, as well as from some of the world’s best illustrators — and we do mean ‘world’s’, as Derek has managed to find talented artists around the globe.

“At the same time, the editorial content remains king. We’ve challenged our reporters and editors to tackle subjects of direct interest to our readers, from how to navigate rival cell phone plans to finding the right health care provider. We’ve often used the Sunday landscape to be a bit fun and irreverant as well. Consider the cover packages on learning life’s financial lessons from popular movies, or getting married on a budget (a monster hit on latimes.com).

“Finally, I should note that this endeavor has been rewarding for everyone involved. You’ll see a lot of pride in these pages, and that’s no accident.”
