WSJ names new politics and economy editor for Europe, Middle East and Africa

Thorold Barker, the editor of Europe, Middle East and Africa at Dow Jones Newswires and The Wall Street Journal, sent out the following announcement on Tuesday:

We are delighted to announce that Dagmar Aalund is appointed Politics and Economy Editor, Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Based in London, the newly-created position will ensure that our world-class journalism from the region is stronger than ever. The role is vital as we complete the integration of WSJ and newswires – positioning the staff to take on more high-impact analytical pieces and break more news in European hours.

Dagmar will report to Bruce Orwall in London with a dotted line to Adam Horvath in New York. She is perfectly suited to the job. After helping to launch the Wall Street Journal’s international desk during the 2008 financial crisis, she was appointed deputy editor for international news in August 2009. Previously she was deputy editor of the Marketplace section and came to the New York office after working for more than a dozen years in Europe.

While in Europe, she was Germany bureau chief for Dow Jones Newswires in Frankfurt and then joined the Journal, covering beats ranging from the European Central Bank to European real estate. She later moved to Brussels and helped launch the Weekend section before becoming its editor. Dagmar began her career at the Houston Chronicle and is a graduate of Rice University.
