WSJ’s Varghese among the layoffs

Daniel Varghese

Daniel Varghese, who oversaw the gear and gadgets section of Off Duty at The Wall Street Journal, editing stories about personal technology, was among the layoffs at the publication on Thursday.

“I had so much fun working with the team at Off Duty, and hope that you all continue to read their work,” he wrote on Twitter.

Before joining the Journal in February 2022, Varghese was working as an associate editor of The Strategist at New York Magazine. He was also a tech and lifestyle writer at GQ Magazine and has also written for Wirecutter. Varghese has also interned at The Ringer in New York and WAMU 88.5 and New America in Washington.

Varghese is a Georgetown University graduate.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
