Lachlan Cartwright of Breaker examines who might be hired by Wall Street Journal editor in chief Emma Tucker to run its new sports vertical.
Cartwright writes, “Breaker has learned Tucker and Havens have held talks with CNBC Media and Sports Reporter Alex Sherman about joining as Editor-in-Chief of the new vertical.
“Sherman, who helms CNBC’s Sports newsletter and is known for his business and media scoops, is an obvious target for the project.
“Havens and Tucker are also looking to poach from her former employer, the Financial Times, and have had discussions with their Sports Business Reporter, Samuel Agini, about joining the vertical to cover European sports, according to people familiar with the situation.
“This wouldn’t be the first time Tucker has raided the FT. She poached the FT’s U.S. News Editor David Crow to be deputy editor-in-chief in 2023. She also went back for seconds and tried to hire then FT News Editor Tom Braithwaite last year, who decided to stay at the Pink ‘Un (Braithwaite was in June rewarded for his loyalty and promoted to deputy editor).
“In meetings, Tucker has remained tight-lipped about the Journal’s direction for their new sports vertical. Saying only that it will be a B2B subscription product charged in addition to the Journal’s current subscription. In time, the Journal may end up bundling it with its current subscription offering.”
